Position Summary:
Working as a postdoctoral fellow, the incumbent's primary responsibility will be the bioinformatic and statistical analysis of metagenomic sequence data. These data are generated as part of an NIH funded R24 grant entitled: Research to Improve and Standardize Marmoset Nutrition and Dietary Husbandry. The primary goal of the metagenomic study is to determine the effects that changes in the diets of captive marmosets have on the composition and function of the gut microbiome. The incumbent will: design and conduct analyses of data; help prepare reports for collaborators, manuscripts for publication, and presentations for appropriate scientific meetings; and collaborate on the preparation of research proposals. There will be substantial opportunity to develop and test new methods of analysis for answering secondary questions.
This position is one of two that will join the growing group of microbial ecology researchers at the University of Idaho (UI) in Moscow, Idaho. The university has a rich research environment that is well suited for interdisciplinary studies. It is a high research activity, land-grant institution committed to undergraduate and graduate education, including the medical and veterinary education programs for the state of Idaho. Minimum Qualifications:
Education: PhD in Bioinformatics, Statistics or related fields.
Good knowledge of: metagenomic sequence data analysis; principles of statistics.
Experience: using software to perform metagenomic analyses; ability to program in R; writing reports and presentations; compiling and analyzing data and drawing conclusions; interpreting and communicating material (orally and in writing) into information usable by a diverse target audience.
Ability to: originate, develop and independently complete complex research programs; establish collaborative and cooperative scientific relationships
Preferred Qualifications:
Research experience in the analysis of microbial communities from mammalian gastrointestinal tracts.
Ability to develop statistically supported methods of metagenomic sequence data analysis.
Experience with GitHub, Open Science Framework or other development platforms and data repositories.
