Position Summary
The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student employed by the Department of Residence Life and Housing Operations who lives in the residence halls and serves as the first point of contact for residents. This is a part-time position whose anticipated workload averages to 20 hours or less a week. The RA works with the Residence Life Professional Staff to establish a positive environment for the development of residents through programming, residence hall standards, and supportive living and learning communities in the residence halls. The Resident Assistant (RA) works under the direct supervision of the RL Professional Staff of his/her area and the indirect supervision of the entire RL Professional Staff. Resident Assistants are expected to meet all expectations as set forth by the Focused Learning And Growth System resident curriculum. There are positions at both UIW and IWHS/STA Residence Life program.
The RA is expected to know the individual students on his or her floor on a personal basis, and provide assistance and support and serve as a resource to the residents. The RA is primarily involved in creating a community environment that is focused on student engagement and involvement. In order to accomplish this, the RA must be flexible and creative in meeting the needs of the residents. As a result, the RA is expected to engage in a variety of constantly changing roles. Each RA is expected to develop and implement activities and programs that enhance community and meet residents' personal and academic needs. The RA serves as a role model on and off campus for students in every aspect of University life and is expected to guide his or her residence in the development of community standards of behavior, as well as in upholding University policies and procedures. This position requires a serious time commitment and willingness to be available and accessible to other students. Because of the critical role and demanding nature of the position, it is expected that the responsibilities of the RA be the number one priority after academics.
This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.
Essential Functions
-Leadership and Student Engagement: Serve as a role model for students and peers, participate with recruitment and training events;
-Assistance to Residents and Department: Know each resident in the area, be accessible, enter work orders, perform on-call duties, work in an office, assist with departmental events;
-Staff Development: participate in training, attend weekly meetings, participate in FLAGS Functional Lead;
-Community Development and Programming: Perform and document intentional interactions, develop hall programming and community gatherings, bring residents to events on campus;
-Student Responsibility: enforce university policy, respond to roommate concerns, serve as a mediator
-Perform other duties as assigned

Work Hours

-8 hours in the hall (University);
-1 on-call weekday duty night per week;
-1 weekend duty weekend every 4-6 weekends
