Responsibilities:
The Communications Associate is an entry-level communications professional with a strong desire to develop writing and editorial skills that support Northeastern's efforts to engage its donors and prospects at all levels. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Advancement Communications, the Communications Associate works closely with University Advancement's Annual Giving team and interacts frequently with other division staff, including gift officers, and senior-level administrators, faculty, and donors, striving to communicate compelling reasons to support Northeastern.

This position will focus on learning to draft engaging, targeted print and electronic annual giving appeals, while editing appeals written by other members of the team. As part of the Advancement Communications team, the Communications Associate will also be enlisted to write brochure copy, craft webpage content, edit proposals, proofread documents, and handle other appropriate projects as they arise. Additionally, this person will compile, draft, and publish content for the division's internal newsletter.

This junior-level employee should have good writing skills, be flexible and comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, and be willing to learn to develop creative ideas into compelling, donor-centric communications pieces. S/he should also work to develop an understanding of the essential role fundraising and campaigns play in building a successful nonprofit environment.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One to two years of professional experience in nonprofit writing/communications, media relations, or a related field.
  • Good editing, proofreading, and writing skills.
  • A willingness to learn to craft persuasive, donor-centric appeals and other communications pieces.
  • A strong desire to work effectively within a valued, fast-paced communications operation of writers, designers, and video producers utilizing a full range of print, multimedia, and online communications tools to meet strategic goals.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively with colleagues throughout the division.
  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures related to the position, including strong knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and matters of style.
  • The ability to write from the perspective of university leaders, students, faculty, alumni, and donors for various audiences.
  • The capacity to learn subject-specific terminology for use in developing written materials for diverse disciplines.
  • Good organizational and project management skills.
