About the Opportunity
Summary:
The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation, Facilities coordinates the operations of Campus Recreation facilities, working closely with the Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation, Facilities and the Associate Director for Health, Wellness, and Safety, to ensure proper usage, safety, scheduling, and programming of recreational facilities. This position supports a vibrant campus life, enhancing the effectiveness of services that the Campus Recreation department provides to the campus, and ensuring that department operations are maintained in an effective, up-to-date, and accurate manner. The Assistant Director will serve in a leadership and supervisory role to student workers and part-time TNS (temporary non-student) staff.
Some weekend, evening, and holiday work hours will be required. Must be available to shift work schedule occasionally outside of the Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm weekdays time frame.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; Master's degree preferred.
- At least two to three years of progressive management and supervisory experience in facility operations or similar field required; experience in university recreation preferred.
- Demonstrated strength in ability to communicate, negotiate, and problem-solving skills necessary to successfully manage issues when resolving conflicts related to direct reports/members/others.
- Work experience coordinating facility usage, maintenance, and preparing contracts preferred.
- Current standard First Aid and CPR/AED certification required. Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor certification required within 60 days of hire if not already certified.
- California Driver's License required; ability to drive a car and golf cart required.
- Proficiency in Banner Finance preferred.
- Familiarity of rental contract policies and protocols preferred.
- Familiarity of recreation programming and risk management required.
Demonstrated abilities in the following areas:
- Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and supervisorial skills.
- Ability to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all levels of university constituencies and members of the public.
- Ability to identify problems, assess alternatives, render consistent and logical decisions.
- Communicate with clarity, tact, and diplomacy with a variety of people on the phone, via email, in meetings, and in person, when dealing with members/students/public/external constituents.
- Ability and interest in serving as a mentor for students.
- Strong budgeting and accounting skills.
- Strong computer skills, proficiency in all applications in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task in an environment with frequent interruptions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and make minor repairs on equipment preferred.
- Must be able lift and carry objects over 45 lbs.
Key Responsibilities
Department Operations:
- Manage all aspects of the fitness center, gymnasium, tennis courts, fields, and other recreation facilities.
- Perform daily facility inspections to identify maintenance or housekeeping needs, manage preventative maintenance programs for fitness equipment, and report on work order requests and equipment repair progress. Work collaboratively with the Senior Associate Director of Facilities to evaluate and coordinate facility repairs, maintenance, housekeeping, and capital projects.
- Work with the Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation to make budget and programmatic recommendations.
- Assist with scheduling of facilities, including assisting in scheduling instructional fitness classes and other programs for the college community.
- Support the Senior Associate Director with the facility rental contract process for external groups.
- Make recommendations for facility improvements and repairs and manage projects as assigned.
- Oversee vehicle maintenance, training, and checkout process for the Campus Recreation department.
- Advise on efficiencies and innovation where observed.
- Maintain safe work conditions and comply with established safety policies, practices, procedures, and requirements.
- Communicate with staff and community members, provide information to outside users, and inform and provide input regarding protocols around facility use, safety, and emergency procedures.
Campus Recreation Engagement:
- Hire, train, and supervise student workers and part-time temporary staff. Conduct monthly in-service training and first aid/CPR courses.
- Support the implementation, review, and recommendations related to facility policies and procedures including facility access, emergency action plans, and standard operating procedures.
- Maximize usage of facilities and provide inclusive training and programming to introduce a wide range of constituents to the facilities.
- Serve as an ambassador and advocate for Campus Recreation internally and externally and provide day-to-day leadership on any projects assigned by the Associate Directors.
- Participate in department meetings for project planning and direction setting.
- Coordinate ongoing department and Division of Student Life projects and assist with development of new projects in related functional areas.
The expected hiring range for this position is $66,560 to $70,000 based on the position's scope and responsibilities.
