Job Summary

The Colorado Shared Instrumentation in Nanofabrication and Characterization (COSINC) facility welcomes applications for a highly motivated and collaborative Senior Professional Research Assistant to be part of a cross-functional team to assist mainly in the National Quantum Nanofab (NQN) instrumentation selections and installations, operating and training users on the new Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) system, general cleanroom facility operations and tool repairs. This position provides opportunities to contribute to NQN instrumentation development, interact with a growing and diverse user base (from the CU system and other universities, companies and federal labs) and make contributions to our cleanroom operations, instrumentation maintenance and user-training so that our services and support are offered at the highest possible standards. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team, work in new facilities and make impactful contributions in enabling a wide range of research areas and innovations at CU, as well as the rapidly growing Colorado quantum ecosystem.
The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The COSINC facility, within the College of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Colorado (CU), Boulder, is a multidisciplinary shared user campus facility and service center that provides access to state-of-the-art equipment in the areas of micro and nanofabrication, nanomaterials characterization and offers expertise and advanced hands-on training in the same related areas. It is an open-research facility serving the academic, industrial and governmental researchers across campus and beyond. Further, COSINC will support the recent NSF award to build the National Quantum Nanofab (NQN) facility, that will be annexed to the existing COSINC ISO5/6 cleanroom. COSINC cleanroom provides a wide range of instrumentation ranging from etchers, thin-film deposition systems, lithography, mask making tools to wet-processing capabilities, sample characterization instruments and the industry-grade Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) system for high resolution nanoscale patterning.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The roles and responsibilities will include but will not be limited to the following:
  • Operate, maintain, and train users on the EBL system, including development of pattern exposure protocols.
  • Train users on the Beamer proximity software tool and develop pattern layout and data protocols.
  • Liaise, coordinate and communicate with EBL tool vendor to resolve technical issues quickly.
  • Assist in the NQN instrumentation selection and tool specifications based on users' feedback.
  • Assist in NQN tool installations, operations and process qualifications, including user training and SOP development.
  • Carry out maintenance, calibration, repairs, trouble shooting of various pieces of equipment such as mask aligners, laser mask writers, thin-film evaporators and coating tools, reactive-ion etchers, spinners and wet-benches.
  • Oversee maintenance of vacuum pumps and general cleanroom housekeeping.
  • Train and onboard users on various instrumentation as needed.
  • Development of EBL nanofabrication processes, including processes on novel materials.
  • Upload and manage resources on the facility resource scheduler system.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation of the protocols, instrumentation logs, and/or data collected by the facility.
  • Assist with administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation such as collecting and/or entering facility billing data.
  • Assist in hands-on outreach activities to recruit users.
  • Enforcing user safety and compliance guidelines daily and annual lab safety EHS audits.
