Agricultural Seed Technician, Senior

Position Summary:
The seed technician assists the program coordinator by managing fields for limited-generation seed increases of various crops. These tasks are conducted with a minimum of supervision and involve working with and supervising seasonal help.
Duties include:
- Planning, planting, maintaining, inspecting, removing off-type plants, harvesting, seed cleaning, seed treating, and packaging
- Arranging agreements with contract growers
- Working with the Idaho Crop Improvement Association and the Idaho Department of Agriculture to assure certification seed standards
- Applying pesticides and fertilizers
- Operating, maintaining, and cleaning field equipment including planters, tractors, and harvesting equipment
- Operating, maintaining, and cleaning seed processing equipment and forklift
- Cleaning and treating seeds
- Adhering to certification regulations and state and Federal seed laws
- Maintain written and computerized inventories
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Experience with equipment used in agricultural field production systems
- Experience with methods used in production of various seed crops, operation, maintenance and repair of specialized field machinery and seed conditioning equipment
- Experience working independently in field-based tasks
- Experience following safety practices
- Experience with record keeping associated with certified seed production, shipping and inventory
Preferred Qualifications:
- Specific knowledge of: crop seed production, particularly planting, harvest, cleaning, seed treating and bagging operations
- Experience with agricultural chemical applications
- Two years of college including science courses, plus one year of related work experience; or three years of related work experience
- Knowledge of: basic personal computer hardware and software programs, including Word and Excel
- Possess good organizational skills; neat work habits
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move items weighing up to 80 lbs
- Repeatedly work with toxic, volatile, corrosive, or carcinogenic substances
- Ability to handle, mix and apply pesticides
- Ability to work in areas where pesticides are being applied or have been applied
- Work with plants and soil materials
- Work in adverse environmental conditions, such as hot and cold environments, wet or dusty and/or noisy environments
