Job Summary:

This position is a senior-level position within the translational pillar of the Gates Institute and will be responsible for working with a team of scientists to develop and implement early-stage process development for cell and gene therapy products. Products will be developed to support Phase I clinical trials on the University of Colorado campus.

The incumbent will transfer novel cell and gene therapy projects from academic research labs to translational sciences and upon completion of process development, work closely to transfer the finalized process to the GMP manufacturing facility. This role will be responsible for the completion of research, experiments and assignments that have an impact on functional goals including the creation of new drugs that will be tested in humans.

This position requires working both independently and as a member of a broader cross-functional team, and will involve interacting with the research lab, project management, and interfacing with external clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform aseptic cell culture and processes on a routine basis. Handle a variety of different cell types (T cells, NK cells and iPSCs) in cell culture experiments
  • Perform viral and non-viral transduction of cells with either gamma retrovirus, lentivirus, RNA, etc.
  • Apply solid design of experimentation (DoE) fundamentals to design, execute, troubleshoot and analyze experiments independently. Collaborate internally with other Research, Process Development and Analytical Development Scientists to interrogate our novel therapies in model systems and analytical methodologies.
  • Interpret, evaluate, and present data with Scientists and Research Associates at meetings or through development reports
  • Identify process and analytical issues when they arise, communicate them to management and participate in troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Understand the theoretical basis and experimental objectives and how they fit into the overall project goals
  • Generate, maintain and review electronic lab notebook entries and reports.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 4-5 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSc in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, oncology, or related field. At least 2+years' experience within the field of cellular immunology, preferably cell therapy.

  • 2+ years of expertise in aseptic mammalian cell culture.

  • 2+ years of expertise in multicolor flow cytometry.

  • 2+ years of experience related to cell-based therapeutics.

    Condition of Employment

  • This position may require weekend work and work outside of normal work hours to accommodate the completion of critical processes for product development. While not typical, this irregularity of work hours should be expected.

    Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSc in biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, oncology or related field

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience within the field of cell and/or gene therapy

  • 3+ years' experience related to cell-based therapeutics.

  • Experience with molecular biology protocols (i.e. d/dd/qPCR, Western, RT-PCR, basic cloning), cell-based assays, cell viability assays, and/or fluorescence microscopy; experience with CRISPR gene editing and more complex techniques a plus

  • Experience in sterile tissue culture technique and working with human cells.

  • Experience working in a start-up environment with a track record of being a team-oriented, self-starter capable of operating independently.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

    Anticipated Pay Range:

    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $56,003 - $71,236 per year.

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
