College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia Department of Physiology's focus is the framework of the body's cells, organs and systems, how they work, and how abnormal function leads to disease. The department is dedicated to outstanding research and excellence in education. Our federally funded scientists study some of the nation's top killers like cardiovascular disease and hypertension, and train independent, creative, productive scholars and PhD graduates, who publish in top tier journals and who are competitive for positions wherever they choose to go. The department offers programs leading to the PhD degree. By virtue of their interdisciplinary training, the department's graduates compete successfully for positions in medical schools, universities, government, and industry.

Job Summary

This position provides administrative and technical oversight for a research laboratory in the Department of Physiology at the Medical College of Georgia. Responsibilities include ensuring research protocols are followed and met; safety guidelines are followed in accordance with institution and government regulations; management of laboratory resources; providing teaching and technical oversight to students, postdoctoral fellows, and technicians; process data, present findings and assist Principal Investigator (PI) with current and future research applications and programs of study.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

GENERAL LAB OVERSIGHT: Provide daily oversight and supervision of students, post-docs and technicians in the lab to ensure research experiments are followed according to protocol. Assist in the development of new lab techniques and troubleshoot problems.

DATA ANALYSES: Perform complex data analysis related to producing research results and prepare findings for future development in coordination with lab personnel.

INVENTORY AND PROTOCOLS: Maintain the supply inventory to ensure chemicals, lab supplies and equipment are available and stored properly and in accordance with regulations. Maintain and create protocols for EH&S purposes; provide oversight of lab inspections; maintain the chemical inventory database.

LAB ANIMAL MANAGEMENT: Coordinate administrative and technical arrangements of animal models and maintain records related to use. Maintain and create protocols for Lab Animal Services / IACUC purposes; provide oversight of lab inspections.

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Use independent judgement in the daily operation of the lab to ensure safe and efficient use of resources. Monitor use of resources to ensure compliance with institutional, state and federal guidelines and protocols to include troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment and the assessment of needed repairs and/or replacements.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Track and monitor budgetary resources to ensure effective lab operations to include assessing and scrutinizing supply/animal/equipment purchase requests and reconciliation of invoices and budgets.

QUALITY ASSURANCE: Develop and manage the quality assurance plan for specific research initiatives to ensure the integrity of the research is maintained.

DATA DISSEMINATION: Aid in the preparation of professional papers on research results in collaboration with the PI and laboratory personnel; assist PI with data preparation for grant applications and renewals.

OTHER: Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. from an accredited college or university with a minimum of one year directly applicable experience; previous supervisory experience.

OR

Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of five years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience and previous supervisory experience.

OR

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of eight years' progressive grant management, resources management and quality assurance program development experience and previous supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded project (PI, Dr. Christopher Waters) and the ideal candidate will have research experience in the field of pulmonary disease with a focus on acute lung injury, inflammation, ventilator-induced lung injury, mechanobiology, or pulmonary fibrosis.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

SKILLS

Detail-oriented with excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

ABILITIES

Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work with and handle rodents.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Salary Minimum: $62,300 annually.

Pay Band: B12

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
