College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia's Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy is dedicated to understanding cellular function through state-of-the art research in areas such as autophagy and apoptosis, bone metabolism, developmental biology, molecular motors, dysphagia/swallowing disorders, exosome biology, renal disease, stem cell research, vision science (retina and cornea), and cell wounding. The Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy has as its core mission the advancement of outstanding research and education. We work collaboratively to discover new knowledge through innovative biomedical research, to transmit that knowledge to students, and to train future researchers, educators, and health care professionals.

Job Summary

A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of aging research (Alzheimer's) efforts in Dr. Xingjun Fan's laboratory. We are using cutting-edge technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas9 gene engineering, knock-out/knock-in mouse models, in vivo surgical approach, GFP reporter mouse, high-resolution imaging, lenti/retro-viral expression, lenti-viral shRNA, and high throughput screen (HTS) to tackle scientific questions. We have published our studies in high impact journals, such as PNAS, Aging Cell, and Cell Death & Disease etc. This is a key position within the lab and will be responsible for planning and execution of experiments in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator. Individuals will participate in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; publish results in scientific journals. Perform a variety of complex chemical, biological, cytologic, microscopic, histologic, surgical, clinical, statistical/computational and dissection procedures.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

PROJECT PLANNING: Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.

ANALYZE: Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histologic and cell culture procedures related to aging (Alzheimer's research).

COORDINATE/PARTICIPATE: Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally and internationally.

COMPOSE: Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.

SUPERVISE/COORDINATE ACTIVITIES: Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures and other technological aspects of research activities.

CALIBRATE/TROUBLESHOOT: Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.

OTHER: Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. and/or M.D. from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with mouse colonies and in imaging.

Experience with planning/execution of experiments in close collaboration with PI.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



Knowledge and experience in aging research (Alzheimer's). Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.

ABILITIES

Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently, develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
