Job Description Summary
The candidate directs and oversees one or more aspects of Kevin B Johnson's Lab (AI-4-AI Lab). Directs research team and resources to accomplish specific goals and objectives. Responsible for planning activities for the specific research program, including implementing policies and procedures. The director will guide internal and external collaborators to the Institution. They will be responsible for seeing that the lab achieves program objectives within established timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Working with the PI, the candidate will ensure that the appropriate infrastructure and quality systems are in place to support all research.

Job Description

This candidate oversees the day-to-day operations and supervision of lab employees. Provide advice and guidance, managing all research personnel activity, including the oversight and development of training initiatives and standard operating procedures. Collaborates with the administrative team on strategy development for all operational activities and ensures that appropriate strategies are aligned with institutional objectives. Develops best practices, methods, techniques, and operational standards for clinical research across the enterprise. Ensure streamlined and standardized processes, eliminate redundancies, and ensure sound financial stewardship of space, equipment, and expenditures. Partner with research finance team and administration to manage research budgets. Develops and maintains collaborative partnerships. Act as a liaison between key stakeholders. Direct communication of priorities to ensure execution of goals and milestones through regular meetings, status updates, and other written communications. Operationalize and oversee clinical trial metrics' data collection, archival, and reporting. Oversee internal audits to ensure adherence to quality standards and operational best practices and to identify potential risks.

Job Responsibilities
  • Identify and cultivate research opportunities; facilitate contract and budget negotiations and complete regulatory start-up. Grant writing and facilitating grant submission with the Business Office.
  • Overall management of studies and projects with the determination of feasibility. Responsible for regulatory oversight of multiple projects and must possess full knowledge and understanding of all of the lab protocols.
  • Provide research and administrative support to the lab in financial decision-making (internal and external budgets, staff salary support and effort distribution, purchasing)
  • Create and modify research protocols. Attend, coordinate, and lead study meetings. Provide oversight to personnel. Work with PI to perform data cleaning and analysis. Work with leadership to identify, justify and utilize resources in an efficient manner; assist with presentations to other Penn officials. Interact with the SOM business office to assist with the oversight of budgeting, billing, and monitoring of financial activity for research studies. Provide leadership to coordinate activities between budgeting and contracting, and financial execution ensuring compliance.
  • Anticipate timelines, analyze requirements to accomplish major and minor projects, organize and delegate tasks to faculty and staff, follow through to completion. Advise on guidelines, protocols, procedures, forms, formats, budgets, and regulatory requirements.
  • Management of team meetings: staff meetings, program and PI meetings, business meetings.
  • Management of lab staff; Responsible for hiring, orientation, mentoring, training of new and current personnel, ongoing staff education and completing performance evaluations and management, if required, as well as overseeing day to day operations of group
  • Supervise and work directly with PI and research coordinators to oversee goals and activities related to research; seek ways to expand capabilities of the program to improve service to faculty investigators and to take fullest advantage of the available resources of Penn.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Master's Degree with at least 5-7 years of related experience; or combination of equivalent education and experience in biomedical or engineering research or research administration in an academic or industry setting required. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Two (2) years of management or supervisory experience
  • Experience in financial management, including budget preparation and management.
  • Advanced understanding of research study processes and key operational interfaces.
  • Proven track record in operational delivery of multicenter research projects - results oriented.
  • Previous experience with grant writing and submissions, budget creation and resource allocation preferred
