POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Programming and Engagement (ADPE) is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the department's programming efforts focused on providing an environment rooted in belonging, inclusion, and community development. The ADPE will be charged with providing administrative and management support to the Associate Director of Residential Life and in the implementation of SHRL's mission, vision, and values for a residential campus with approximately 3,500 beds. The primary areas of responsibility are to implement community and large-scale events, management of the student programming board, and associated collaboration with campus partners.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
Leadership and Supervision:
- Directly supervise, train, develop, and evaluate full-time, live-in professional staff members that support on campus residential communities.
- Indirectly oversee student staff positions such as but not limited to, Graduate Student Assistants, Resident Advisors (RAs), Community Advisors (CAs), and Student Assistants (SAs) spanning across on-campus housing buildings and apartments in East Campus.
- Assist with the ongoing growth and development of multifaceted programming development which may include, but is not limited to, residential student experience curriculum, Theme Communities, academic initiatives, first-year housing programs, transfer experience, athletics, international programs, and graduate and family housing.
- Assist with developing, coordinating, and implementing a residential curriculum that supports belonging, community development, and inclusion through small- and large-scale SHRL programming and events.
- Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Residential Life, approve and evaluate all financial expenditures in assigned areas for program budgets, and oversee the area program budget process.
- Serve in the Administrator On-Call emergency crisis response rotation for SHRL.
- Serves as a member of the Residential Life (RL) leadership team and attends Residential Life weekly meetings, training, etc.
- Facilitate and assist in resolving staff and student concerns and emergencies which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
- Under the guidance of the Associate Director of Residential Life and Assistant Director of Organizational Development, lead the Residential Life Leadership team members on efforts including Resident Advisor and Community Advisor recruitment, selection and implementation of training for residential life student staff to get leaders ready to support students within their communities.
- Oversee the creation, implementation, evaluation, and assessment of a scaffolded Programming model for Residential Life staff.
- Create, manage, supervise, and evaluate a Programming and Involvement Board composed of 3-6 student assistants.
- Oversee the implementation, in collaboration with the Marketing team and specifically Marketing SAs, delivery, and assessment of community-building programs, leadership workshops, academic achievement celebrations, and mentorship programs. Develop year-long priorities and a calendar of events and activities.
- Regularly attend and support events to ensure on-site success including evening and weekend events.
- In coordination with campus partners including, but not limited to, First-Year Experience, Second-Year Experience, Associated Students, the Otter Student Union, the Student Disability and Accessibility Center, Center for Advising, Career and Student Success, Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management, University Affairs, Ceremonies, and Events (UACE), and Dining, develop, plan, and execute year-round shared large-scale events and monthly RA programming.
- Serve as administrator lead for SHRL software utilized for all event management including, marketing, RA program accountability, and assessment.
- Create and maintain relationships with the Cooperative Learning Center (CLC), Academic Advising, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC), International Programs (IP), and other campus resources, as appropriate, to bring academic resource services into student housing communities.
- Evaluate and assess signature programs and events by the Programming and Involvement Board and Resident Advisors, and identify trends in higher education that impact student engagement.
- Provide strategic vision and oversee signature programs, with a budget of approximately $125K such as, but not limited to, Ottumn Festival, Flower Festival, Eggs After Dark, etc. Work closely with Legal and Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management to reduce liability.
- Oversee annual residential academic recognition program, including, but not limited to semester academic recognition letters, participation in the annual Outstanding Otters and the Residential Life Communities of Academic Achievement event, and other celebrative efforts to recognize the academic achievements of residential students.
- Represent SHRL on University-wide committees to leverage opportunities for promoting learning-centered residential experiences, such as but not limited to the Orientation Advisory Board, Student Engagement and Wellness Collaborative (SEWC), and Campus Special Events Logistics and Safety Working Group.
- Act as an additional point of contact to any campus partners when working through residential projects, concerns, or agreements.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Serve as the primary point of contact and chair of various department committees as assigned.
- Identify issues of residential area(s) or departmental concern and take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in identifying potential solutions.
- Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus as the department and University continue to grow.
- May coordinate or assist with planning and facilitating various staff training workshops for professional and paraprofessional staff.
- Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the SHRL program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of practice, procedure, management, and activities of SHRL Program. This candidate will have a substantial understanding of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues. This candidate must have the ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must have the ability to manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints sensibly. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university AND at least two years of experience managing and coordinating residential programs.
- Working knowledge of the practice, procedures, management, and activities of a Housing and Residential Life program.
- Additional experience beyond the minimum requirement demonstrating that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for up to two years of education on a year-for-year basis.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Additional experience as live-in staff and Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; experience planning large-scale programming and/or social events
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.

The hiring range for this position is $65,000 - $72,000. Classification: Grade 6, Management. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
