Simmons College
The Academic Advisor's main function is to provide accurate and timely academic advising to all undergraduate students enrolled at Simmons College. Primarily, the position advises a caseload of first-year Nursing majors. The Academic Advisor supports the goals of the Undergraduate Advising Office by executing programming and creating innovative ideas to promote the office and benefit the Simmons population. This role also supports the Center for Student Success with advising related tasks and works to create relationships with other offices around campus.
Serve as the primary advisor for first-year Nursing majors;
Coordinate and plan large scale group advising sessions with Nursing faculty prior to Fall and Spring registration dates;
Monitor and advise students internally applying to the Nursing program to ensure satisfactory grades and GPA requirements, as well as course planning;
Monitor advisees academic progress, including warnings and probation, and follow-up with students in academic jeopardy;
Be available to meet with students often and as needed throughout the year, through scheduled appointments and/or open office hours;
Understand the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.;
Stay abreast of changing institutional information including new programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updates in college-wide initiatives and policies;
Develop and implement Fall and Spring group advising for first-year Nursing students alongside faculty members;
Contribute to the organization and delivery of general programming for undergraduate students;
Collaborate with Student Affairs, Department Chairs, Faculty, Registrar's Office, Student Life, Disability Services, Career Education Center, etc.;
Assist in the implementation of advising and registration session of all incoming first-year students during June Orientation;
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
Experience involving extensive student contact in a student services role at a community college or four-year institution;
Skilled at connecting and building rapport with students;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
The ideal candidate will possess strong time management, customer service, problem solving and interpersonal skills, will be adaptable to new and rapidly changing situations, will be creative and innovative and demonstrate the ability to work independently and with a team. Ability to successfully resolve student issues from request through resolution;
Must have a strong commitment to education.
