Position Summary
The Academic Advisor focuses on facilitating the delivery of excellent services to students, is assigned to academic areas and contributes to the University's retention efforts, in addition to coordinating academic advising support services. An important goal of the university's undergraduate academic advising program is to increase student retention and graduation. The Academic Advisor works under the direction of the Director of Academic Advising.


This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Description of Job Duties
-Assists with the administration of the Universitys undergraduate academic advising program;
-Serves as academic advisor to undeclared full-time and part-time students;
-Assists students in the development of educational plans, consistent with university academic policy;
-Helps prepare students for admission into their chosen majors;
-Assists students in the continuous evaluation of progress towards established goals and educational plans;
-Helps students identify and assess alternatives and consequences of their decisions;
-Assists undeclared students in their consideration of the selection of a major and career choice;
-Monitors academic progress of at-risk students, including conditional admits and students on scholastic probation;
-Participates in student academic probation & suspension activities;
-Assists with the administration of the Student Intervention Program;
-Serves as a mediator in the resolution of student/advisor or student/instructor conflict;
-Coordinates assignment of faculty advisors and processing of changes of advisor and/or major;
-Coordinates advising support services during New Student Orientations and Advising Day;
-Assists students in obtaining accurate information about University policies, resources, and programs;
-Maintains accurate student records;
-Serves as information and referral service to students, faculty, staff & parents;
-Performs other duties as assigned


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
-Understanding of higher education;
-Proficiency in handling multiple priorities, meeting deadlines and solving problems;
-Proficient computer skills and knowledge of the Banner System;
-Ability to communicate well with others;
-Outstanding ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times;
-Knowledgeable in counseling or advising in a higher education setting;
-Excellent human relations and communications skills;
-Strong leadership qualities;
-Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
-Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA

Required Education
Bachelors degree in business administration, social sciences, education, life science, physical science, mathematics, or related field

Required Work Experience
-Two (2) years experience in counseling and/or advising in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications
-Superior work ethic;
-Strong writing and research skills;
-Excellent interpersonal skills;
-Experience with data base management systems: Microsoft Office, Windows XP, Excel, Word, Filemaker, Xtender, etc.
