Lab Technician

About the Opportunity

The Sustainability & Social Change Lab is accepting applications for a full-time Lab Technician to join an interdisciplinary lab focused on social, cultural, and political dimensions of sustainability challenges. This Lab Technician will be based at Northeastern University, where they will work closely with Prof. Sara Constantino, and a team of PhD students, postdocs, and collaborators at other universities.

The lab explores research questions related to cooperation and collective action in the context of environment, climate, and social inequality; the dynamics by which social movements/norms/narratives emerge and existing ones become entrenched (e.g. social tipping, social norms, cultural evolution, polarization); and the impacts of acute shocks/crises on communities, political behaviors, and adaptation decisions.

The Lab Technician will primarily coordinate research and resources in the lab to aid in the lab's day-to-day affairs. The Lab Tech is also encouraged to develop and lead novel research projects as well as participate in ongoing projects, with opportunities to publish research in academic journals. The Lab Tech will have the opportunity to mentor and work with a team of undergraduate research assistants on a variety of projects. The position is ideal for someone planning to apply to a PhD program and for someone with interdisciplinary interests focused on applied problems, such as climate change and poverty.

The duration of the position is one year, with the possibility of extending the position for up to two years. The start date is flexible but ideally would be in June, July, or August of 2024. Qualifications include a BA/BSc in a relevant social science field, and a demonstrated history of experience conducting research and writing scientific papers. Familiarity with statistics including statistical software (e.g. R), and comfort with both quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods is preferable.

To apply, please provide the following: 1) A one-page cover letter describing your interest and relevant experience for the position (such as experience conducting psychological research, and/or project coordination); 2) A CV or resume; 3) a writing sample (preferably a sole-authored publication or class paper) showcasing your previous research experience. Please contact the current Lab Technician, Clara Riggio, with any questions [c.riggio@northeastern.edu].

Applicants from under-represented minority groups in academia are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, Latina/o, first generation to college, and LGBTQ scholars.
