Job Description

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Puente Counselor will be dedicated to the enhancement of cultural and educational experiences of Hispanic, Latino/a/x, and other students within the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. The Puente Counselor serves as a generalist and a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of Hispanic, Latino/a/x, and other marginalized students. This entails providing counseling services related to transfer, occupational programs, and career and academic skills development from a student centered and culturally sustaining lens.

The Puente Community College Program is an academic, counseling and mentoring program that pairs English and Counseling faculty to provide support for students and build the skills necessary for success in both academic and career goals while in community college. Students enrolled in the Puente program work closely with their Counselor, English Instructor and Mentor to prepare for transfer to four-year universities, specifically the University of California. This position will collaborate with other campus student support programs to enhance the cultural and educational experiences of students of color.

Reporting to the Dean of Counseling and in close collaboration with the co-coordinator (English faculty member), the Puente Counselor as a co-coordinator will provide leadership and program expertise in the implementation of the goals and objectives of the Puente program. This position will maintain and provide counseling and support services for incoming and continuing Puente students, and will co-lead with instructional counterparts in a learning community that satisfies UCOP MOU requirements. The Puente Counselor will prepare reports, collect data to meet college and MIS data requirements and maintain contact with the statewide office to offer campus program updates. The position will be responsible for teaching counseling courses, leading workshops, orientations, and events. The Puente Counselor will assist in developing and implementing necessary retention programs to meet the program participant needs in alignment of the strategic plan and support of the advancement of the vision, mission, and values of Cuyamaca College. The Puente Counselor assumes responsibility for attending regularly scheduled trainings, maintaining currency in the field and for assisting in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes, program review and planning, and participation in department activities.

The Puente Counselor will be expected to actively participate on campus and within the broader community by serving on departmental and college committees and taking a leadership role in campus, community, and professional organizations. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments. Cuyamaca College is strongly committed to providing open access and serving a diverse student population. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling.

A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees
AND a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

OR

The equivalent. If you are applying based on "the equivalent", you will need to complete an Equivalency Determination Form. This form MUST be submitted as part of the application procedures.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and proficiency in educational, career, and personal counseling at a community college or university.
Ability to teach career planning, college success and other personal development courses at the post-secondary level.
Training and experience working with individuals and groups in providing personal and crisis counseling.
Ability to counsel students on transfer to four-year institutions.
Ability to advise students about certificates, associate degrees and transfer requirements.
Ability to use technology in providing counseling services.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively with people of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, racial, sexual orientation, religion, and ethnic backgrounds.
Commitment to examine, reflect, and modify instructional, relational, classroom and counseling practices to effectively engage and support disproportionately impacted populations with a goal of closing the equity gaps.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Counseling experience working in a California Community College.
Puente Program Certification/training or awareness of student support programs
An understanding of the interconnectedness of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors contributing to both the achievement of as well as barriers to success for Hispanic/Latinx and other students such as former foster youth, adult reentry, formerly incarcerated/impacted, LGBTQ+, AB540, DACA and undocumented student, and as well as other marginalized student groups
