The mission of the Department of Medical Sciences is to educate and inspire diverse and interdisciplinary professionals to be leaders and innovators in medical science. The department offers an interdisciplinary doctoral degree in Healthcare Leadership, a Master of Science in Physician Assistant (PA) studies, and two interdisciplinary dual masters-degree programs.

Our faculty members are practicing clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders who bring real world experience to the classroom. In addition to clinical practice, our graduates are employed in research, administration, education, and leadership.

Our flagship program in Physician Assistant studies and was Established in 1971, the physician assistant program and has a long-standing history of, and expertise in, the education and training of physician assistants. The PA program is in close proximity to Boston's major academic medical centers and was the first generalist PA training program in the nation to offer a master's degree in 1985. This rigorous, highly integrated curriculum offers our students the opportunity to obtain broad generalist training that is designed to prepare them for successful employment in all fields of clinical practice.

About the Opportunity

The Full-time Faculty/Open Rank Clinical Faculty in the Doctor of Medical Sciences Healthcare Leadership program is responsible for teaching/advising/mentoring doctoral students, assisting and supporting the Program and Associate Program Directors, program administrative duties, facilitating the potential applicant and admissions processes, adjunct faculty, staff, and subject matter expert recruitment, developing healthcare industry leaders, and contributing to the overall academic environment of the Program and Department. The Full-time Faculty member primarily reports to the Department Chair and, on a daily basis, to the Program Director. The position is full-time and is a non-tenure track faculty position. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on the education and professional development of future healthcare leaders.

The position is primarily remote with some on-ground requirements.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include teaching graduate courses and participating in program, departmental, school, college, and university service. Qualified candidates should demonstrate expertise in, or a demonstrated commitment to, working with diverse student populations and/or in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

  • Teach courses in doctoral/thesis writing, healthcare advocacy and leadership and related areas, providing high-quality instruction and fostering an engaging learning environment.
  • Contribute to thesis advising process and management.
  • Develop and update course materials, syllabi, and assessments aligned with current trends and best practices in healthcare leadership.
  • Advise and mentor students, offering guidance on academic and career paths in healthcare leadership.
  • Contribute to developing and enhancing program curriculum, incorporating emerging trends, technologies, and challenges in the healthcare industry.
  • Conduct scholarly activities related to healthcare.
  • Publish research findings in reputable journals and present at conferences and professional events.
  • Participate in departmental and university committees, actively contributing to academic policies, program development, and strategic planning.
  • Foster collaborations and interdisciplinary partnerships within the department and across disciplines to coordinate DMSc procedures and promote innovative research and educational initiatives.
  • Maintain an active presence in professional organizations and networks, staying up to date with industry developments and advancements.
  • Serve on all appropriate College and University committees
  • Perform additional assignments at the direction of the Program Director
  • Engage in outreach activities, such as serving on advisory boards, partnering with healthcare organizations, or participating in community events, to contribute to the healthcare leadership community.
  • Actively recruit and mentor prospective applicants and participate in the admissions process.
  • Primary responsibility for thesis instruction:
    • Oversee and guide students in their thesis research projects, ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines and research protocols.
    • Assist students in formulating research questions, designing studies, and analyzing data relevant to healthcare leadership.
    • Provide regular, formative feedback and support throughout the thesis research process, including critical evaluation, data interpretation, and scholarly writing.
    • Strong knowledge in publications and American Medical Association rules and formatting
    • Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment, fostering students' independent thinking, creativity, and professionalism.
    • Facilitate opportunities for students to present their theses within the program and at external conferences or symposiums.
    • Recruit qualified experts for thesis committees.


Qualifications
  • DMSc, PhD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree in a healthcare-related field by the appointment start date.
  • Demonstrated expertise in healthcare leadership and management, supported by a publication record.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare.
  • A minimum of 3 years of education experience (ie, lecturer, preceptor, or as a core faculty member)
  • Previous experience in online, asynchronous teaching and mentoring students in healthcare-related program.
  • Proficiency with computer technology (ie, Microsoft Office suite, Word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, databases)
  • Ability to engage students in active learning and foster critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with advancements in healthcare leadership practices and policies.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and research.
