The Department of Public Health and Health Sciences in the Bouve College of Health Sciences of Northeastern University is hiring a part time lecturer for the spring 25 term at the Oakland Campus.

Job Summary

This Part-Time Lecturer will be the primary course instructor for HLTH1203: Basic Clinical Skills. HLTH1203 is an introductory-level undergraduate course with no pre- or co-requisite courses that introduces students to the basic knowledge, skills, and professionalism necessary to be successful in entry-level healthcare positions.

Spring Term

Classes: 1/6/25 - 4/15/2025

Final Exams: scheduled independently during the week of 4/17/2025 - 4/26/2025.

Grades Due: April 28/2025 by 2:00pm EST.

Undergraduate courses are scheduled in-person during the day, 2-3 days per week between the hours of 8:00am-6:35pm.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Teach one section of an elective HLTH1203 Basic Clinical Skills
  • Prepare and deliver lectures, course materials, examinations, and evaluation of student performance in the course.
  • Hold office hours and meet in-person or virtually with students as needed.
  • Inventory and maintain equipment, including preparing supply/replacement order requests.

Prepare students to:
  • Demonstrate appropriate verbal and written communication skills used in situations with patients and healthcare practitioners including appropriate medical terminology and clinical documentation.
  • Apply critical thinking to analyze cultural, social and ethical issues in patient care.
  • Apply standard precautions and transmission-based procedures according to Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines.
  • Practice procedures mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for the handling and disposal of infectious wastes or sharp equipment.
  • Earn AHA Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Demonstrate the role of proper body mechanics, posture, and positioning for safe patient handling.
  • Explain the purposes and demonstrate the use of clinical safety devices including bed rails, restraints, call button, and code switch.
  • Measure and record basic vital signs (pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, lung & heart sounds, etc.) with the body in various positions.
  • Understand and perform basic point of care testing (blood glucose, urinalysis, 12 lead ECG, etc)
  • Perform basic patient interviews and physical exams.
  • Perform basic first aid procedures for injuries and illnesses.


Supervision
  • One undergraduate Teaching Assistant may be assigned based upon course enrollment.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred
  • Strongly Preferred: At least 3 years full-time patient-facing clinical experience
  • Preferred: At least 2 years of experience as primary instructor of clinical curricula
  • Required: current certification as AHA Basic Life Support Instructor
  • High attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Canvas or other LMS platforms
