Classification Pay Scale
In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Job Summary
This position provides technical lab support to faculty and students in cellular and molecular biology and immunology research laboratory in the Department of Translational Research by performing a variety of routine and moderately complex laboratory and research-related responsibilities. The Laboratory Technician II works independently, reporting directly to the assigned faculty. Cellular and Molecular biology experiments include, but are not limited to, Cell isolation and culture, Western blotting, qPCR, histopathology including cutting thin sections, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Taking care of rats in animal facilities and conducting experiments on rats and collecting tissues at completion of experiments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions can be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Knowledge of and ability in cell isolation and culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and other routine cellular and molecular biology techniques.
Conducts research experiments using modern laboratory equipment in the general area of cell and molecular biology in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. Collects laboratory measurements and data.
Computes results for a variety of research procedures, tests and techniques.
Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments.
Uses laboratory/computer equipment to conduct analyses of experiment data. Provides routine interpretations of analyses.
Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment. Performs or arranges for basic repairs. May alter equipment to meet experiment requirements. Makes recommendations for equipment acquisitions
Maintains and organizes laboratory supplies. Monitors inventory levels and orders or secures supplies as needed.
Maintains research facility in orderly, operable condition. Maintains security and safety of equipment, samples, specimen and data.
Prepares chemical solutions for experimental use.
Knowledge of appropriate/applicable lab safety standards with proper handling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols.
Ability to work independently after initial training and cooperatively with excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Proficiency with computer software, preferably Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point and lmageJ software.


Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelors degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field. A combination of undergraduate coursework and related experience may be considered.
  • Experience: One to two-year experience with working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols in cell culture and laboratory techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, histology, immunostaining), and familiarity with laboratory safety and proper storage of various types of reagents and chemicals are highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.
