Director, Exploratory Advising
Job Summary
The Director develops advising practices and policies, conducts comprehensive academic, career, and personal advising duties, continuously develops campus-wide Advisor training efforts, acts as a mentor and trainer to other Academic Advisors, evaluates the effectiveness of the advising unit, and serves on college or university committees. The Director of Academic Advising will have leadership responsibilities within the advising unit and will supervise other Academic Advisors.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Remains committed to providing guidance in academic and personal development in a collaborative and mentoring environment.
- Fosters interaction between advisors and students in a supportive atmosphere where students will achieve self-sufficiency while implementing their educational goals to reach degree completion.
- Partners with College/Unit to advocate for student needs related to enrollment management and degree progression.
- Manages advising staff and organizes regular departmental meetings and trainings.
- Completes advisor annual performance evaluations and facilitates hiring and supervision of staff.
- Maintains regular communication and meetings with other Advising Directors and serves as primary liaison to the AVP for University Advising Services.
- Develops and supports the ongoing delivery of a new advisor training program for Academic Advisors.
- Provides and supports professional development activities for Academic Advisors.
- Participates in campus and community recruitment and outreach events (Eagle Expo, Weeks of Welcome, and State College partnerships).
- Directly supports the university's strategic initiatives related to student success, contributing to the institution's overall mission and goals.
- Provides leadership for retention initiatives focused on First Time in College (FTIC) students, working to improve retention rates and student success.
- Fosters a culture of continuous improvement in advising services and programs, ensuring they effectively support students in their transition to the university.

Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- This position requires either fourteen years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Master's degree from an accredited institution in higher education and student affairs, counselor education, psychology or closely related field and eight years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
- Professional full-time experience working in an academic advising environment, or three years of experience at the level of Senior Academic Advisor.
- Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two years professional full-time experience supervising professional staff in a higher education environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of theoretical models of college student development and students in transition.
- Knowledge of advising theory and models of development advising.
- Knowledge of FERPA, state statutes, and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.
- Skill in problem solving, mediation, and dispute resolution.
- Skill in teaching or public speaking.
- Skill in coordinating, planning, and organization.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Skill in collecting and analyzing data related to student success.
- Ability to utilize data and information to make decisions and projections.
- Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.
- Ability to build positive rapport with a variety of constituents.
- Experience using academic advising-related technology, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, and Florida Shines.
- Ability to learn easily and disseminate detailed information.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others or in teams.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to work with complex systems in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Flexible and adaptive in a changing environment.
- Ability to create programming that supports student needs and interests.
- Ability to create training mechanisms that support academic advising.
