Job Summary:
Come join Bucknell University's Facilities team as a Painter I or II and play a key role in transforming spaces, working on interior and exterior projects, and refurbishing furniture and equipment. The Painter I/II position is primarily responsible for performing interior and exterior painting as well as refinishing of furniture and equipment. This position also performs drywall and plaster patching/finishing and completes plastering projects.

Painter I & Painter II: Report to Painter Supervisor.

What You'll Do:

Painter I:

Painting | 40% | Prepare surfaces for painting (wash, scrape, wire brush, tape, finish, etc.). Perform both interior and exterior painting, including but not limited to walls, ceilings, floors and trim work. Prepare and apply stains and clear coats where necessary such as furniture and equipment.

Drywall Finishing & Plaster | 10% | - Mix and apply plaster, stucco and drywall compound as needed for patching, taping and finishing.

Material & Equipment Inventory | 10% | Properly clean and maintain brushes, rollers, sprayers and other paint equipment. Maintain shelves in the painting room by discarding old paint and labeling all items.

Spray Booth | 10% | Prepare items such as casework, furniture and equipment for the spray booth. Comply with the respirator program requirements in order to spray paints, stains and lacquers in the booth.

Site Access | 10% | Operate lifts, ladders, scaffolding, and other equipment to access work areas and complete tasks.

Administrative | 10% | Assist with documenting the cost of work by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job, and providing status reports to the Painter Supervisor regarding the status of work projects, material consumed and man-hours utilized. Utilize email and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to assist in documentation.

Coordination | 10% | Assist with developing bills of materials, interpreting sketches and plans, and coordinating work with other staff and trades.

Other duties as assigned | Participates in all aspects of program and department planning and in the establishment of department goals and objectives.



Painter II:

What You'll Bring:

Painter I:
  • High School diploma or equivalent,
  • Minimum of three years of experience in painting in a residential and/or commercial setting or completion of a painting apprenticeship program.
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety procedures related to construction projects, use of tools, equipment, materials, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to understand written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; take initiative; use good judgment; and communicate effectively verbally and in written formats.
  • Strong customer-focus and time management skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.


Painter II:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience as a painter with patching, plastering and spray painting experience.
  • Experience leading painting projects or the demonstrated ability to successfully lead painting projects.
  • Knowledge of industry standard safety procedures related to construction projects, use of tools, equipment materials, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Experience or a demonstrated ability to operate spray booths.
  • Must be able to understand written and oral instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate and complete tasks independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; take initiative; use good judgment; and communicate effectively verbally and in written formats.
  • Strong customer-focus and time management skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to drive University vehicles.


Preferred, but not required:

Painter I & II:
  • Experience in the building construction industry.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Working knowledge of associated trades.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Lift Training/Certification.
  • 10-Hour OSHA Certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office and other computer programs such as email and calendars and the ability to learn software programs such as work order tracking, events management, scheduling, estimating software and other programs utilized by the university.

Physical Requirements:
  • Lift and carry 75 pounds unassisted.
  • Must have sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Ability to move around work sites including climb ladders, stairs and scaffolds; enter and exit trenches, crawl spaces and confined areas; work on scaffolds, elevated walkways, roofs and elevated areas.
  • Must be able to perform work in a safe manner in accordance with OSHA standards, department and University's policies.
  • Position will be exposed to and use chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to painting work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
  • Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors, including daily exposure to dust, dirt, weather, and temperature changes.


Additional Information:
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required, including overtime.
  • Position is classified as part of essential services. Individuals are required to report to work even if the campus is closed or has a delayed opening/early closing due to emergency/exigent circumstances.
  • Post-offer background checks, including criminal history and driving record, will be conducted.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
