Job Summary


The Center for Infrastructure, Energy, and Space Testing (CIEST) within the Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking one or more full-time Postdoctoral researchers to support a variety of projects focused on assessment of buried infrastructure under extreme loading scenarios (e.g., earthquakes) and life-cycle assessment of state-of-the-art rehabilitation technologies for critical infrastructure. The projects are advancements to growing research needs across a variety of lifeline systems and build upon recent/current research programs, such as DOE/ARPA-e REPAIR which established a framework of physical testing and modeling to enhance the performance and longevity of existing pipeline infrastructure. The projects span multiple universities and intersect with stakeholders across utilities and regulatory agencies to translate the developed knowledge and technologies into engineering practice.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, the position is available immediately and applicants will be reviewed until the positions are filled. The research team includes Prof. Brad Wham, CIEST laboratory staff and students at CU along with collaborators across academic and industry sectors.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


A successful candidate will support research activities associated with current and incoming projects at CIEST involving the testing and analysis of various infrastructure systems to extreme and man-made hazards. They will develop physical experiments and numerical approaches to assess the design life and performance of innovative technologies. Responsibilities include: leading/managing the progression of experimental activities, defining system performance objectives and assessing material response/properties; interpreting/correlating numerical and experimental data; developing and executing experimental procedures for validation; documenting results in reports and publications; and communicating project outputs to various stakeholders (e.g., conference presentations).




What We Can Offer


The annual salary range associated with this position is $46,000 - $58,000. Relocation assistance may be available in accordance with College and Campus policy.

What We Require

  • PhD in structural, geotechnical, mechanical or materials engineering, or related field.


What You Will Need

  • Excellent communications skills (English), both oral and written.
  • Commitment to collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong publication record in primary research literature.
  • Experience in large-scale experimental design and data interpretation.
  • Strong organizational skills including task and critical-path management.
