DESCRIPTION

Mendocino College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track instructor to join our friendly, dynamic biology department. The biology department offers a broad range of courses from non-majors biology, marine sciences, majors' biology, and various courses required for the allied health professions, with most classes composed of lecture and lab components. The Mendocino College Biology Department maintains high standards and places primary emphasis on quality undergraduate education. In addition to the main campus in Ukiah, biology courses are offered at our Centers throughout the district. The department has a laboratory technician who ensures that reagents, supplies and equipment are available and in good working order for all experiments; meets with instructors on a regular basis to coordinate the laboratory program, maintain the instruments or schedule the required maintenance by professionals, and maintain the department inventory. High standards for health and safety are diligently maintained.

The successful candidate will primarily teach Anatomy, with occasional Physiology, Human Biology or other assignments. Classes will be taught on our main campus in Ukiah as well as at our Center sites in Lakeport and Fort Bragg and online. This instructor will be expected to teach regularly at our Center locations.

ASSIGNMENT: This is a full-time, tenure-track position. The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the above. The annual work year includes 166 instructional days and nine professional development/flex days. The start date for this position will be August 18, 2025. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers within the District.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary offered at $72,287 - $100,687. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance with no monthly premium contribution from faculty members. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective at the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403{b) programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

TEACHING:

Instructs classes in Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology as assigned; including one course per semester at a Center location;
Conducts lecture classes and laboratory courses as included in the schedule of classes; prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments; teaches class hours; evaluates students' performance based on quizzes, exams, projects, comprehensive finals and/or other assessments appropriate to the course outline; teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes; prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
Reports on time prepared for classes;
Posts and maintains student contact hours;
Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices; and
Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports.

DEPARTMENT:

Attends department meetings;
Participates in program development, review and revision;
Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion;
Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; and
Collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline.

INSTITUTIONAL:

Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees;
May supervise student workers in the discipline;
Participates in the development of an annual budget for the discipline, participates in the completion of program review;
Participates in the processes of shared governance;
Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline; conducts a periodic inventory of equipment; and
Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways and explore job opportunities, including articulation with local high schools and four-year institutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS:

Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including but not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB Test.

Possess an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender-identity, sexuality, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and a willingness to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.
EDUCATION QUALIFCATION:

The successful applicant is required to meet the minimum qualifications of any one of the following disciplines: Biological Sciences or Kinesiology as defined below.

Biological Sciences Minimum Qualifications:

Master's in any biological science

OR Bachelor's in any biological science

AND Master's in in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science

OR the equivalent
Kinesiology Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education

OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above

AND Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy

OR the equivalent

Physical demands include sitting, standing, bending, walking, and occasional light lifting (up to 15 lbs)
