Job Description
The University of Tennessee College of Social Work (CSW) invites applications for the new IT Technologist position at the Knoxville, TN campus. This position reports to the CSW Chief of Staff and provides in-house guidance, direction, and support at the CSW for existing and emerging technologies in a complex and changing digital environment for students, faculty, staff, and, as appropriate, visitors to the College; manages CSW Knoxville IT resources, provides support to CSW Knoxville classrooms, conferences, and student meeting spaces, provides analysis and solutions, and performs repair and maintenance on all computer hardware, including network servers, and software applications, including database management. This position will serve as IT backup to the Nashville, TN campus-based IT technologist.
Responsibilities
Provides Information Technology Guidance, Direction and Support for CSW
--Works with faculty, staff, and students concerning individual technology issues (involving computers & peripherals) on a daily basis.
--Collaborates with others within the IT department on complex information technology systems and projects.
--Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves problems with a wide variety of hardware or software with little or no supervision.
--Independently handles complicated problems with larger scope or effect often requiring investigation, such as portal downtimes, server outages, backup issues.
--Assists with software updates, upgrades, and implementation as appropriate.
--Provides assistance through techniques that support and promote security and privacy following University and professional guidelines.
--Duties require judgment guided by outcomes, principles, & standards, under limited supervision, such as setting backup times, deciding when to apply corrective action weighed against disruption to users, and evaluating software benefit vs. cost.
--Provides support and collaboration for audio/visual requests at the College, as needed.
Manages College's Network Servers and Databases
--Collaborates with other IT staff to provide network server maintenance, problem solving, and solution implementation, including network connections for devices such as printers.
--Provides database management and administration.
--Evaluates, defines, and makes recommendations or requests for College-wide systems, equipment, and upgrades.
Event Support:
-Coordinates with event organizer on technology setup.
-Provides onsite audio/visual support for events.
-Troubleshoots time-critical malfunctions of audio/visual components.
-Setups up Zoom, Facebook live, YouTube live, and other web/video/audio conferencing technologies independently or in combination.
Maintains Documentation & Collaborates w/ Outside Entities
--Collaboratively manages through records and logs the technology problems and resolutions received from faculty, staff, and students through the College's "ticket" management system.
--Maintains College and University inventories of state equipment.
--Documents and controls warranty information for inventory of hardware.
--Creates and maintains documentation of surplussed equipment.
--Create reports from documented data and professional trends.
--Coordinates projects with external vendors when appropriate.
--Purchases new equipment from external vendors as needed.
--Coordinates warranty repairs with external vendors or the University.
--Collaborates with University of Tennessee's Office of Information Technology as needed.
Implements of New Hardware & Additional Duties as Needed
--Makes recommendations for appropriate new technology
--Prepares new computers, laptops, printers, etc. to communicate with the College and University networks, installing the appropriate software and configuring settings to maximize technology.
--Installs new equipment through the University's annual Computer Upgrade Program, Technology Fee program, and new hires at the College, each position requiring a personalized array of hardware and software.
--Decommissions equipment now obsolete or being replaced through the University's surplus process.
-Other duties as assigned to assist with the operations of the College and our space at Stokely Management Center.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in computer hardware and software technical environment.
- Knowledge of Mac and Windows hardware configuration, software installation and operating systems
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory
- Able to work independently, volunteer and take ownership of problems and projects, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate to users with a wide range of technical understanding, both written and orally.
- Ability to learn new IT systems and processes and stay current on IT-related best practices and security requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to research new technologies and make
Preferred:
- 3-4 years of experience in computer hardware and software technical environment
- 1-2 years of experience working in an academic/research environment
- Knowledge of computer security principles
- Skills in Cloud Storage Applications
