Job Description
Key Responsibilities;
  • Lead and manage the AEGD Program, ensuring high-quality education and training for residents.
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for program growth and excellence.
  • Maintain program compliance with CODA accreditation standards.
  • Oversee the selection, evaluation, and mentorship of AEGD residents.
  • Supervise and coordinate faculty and staff involved in the program.
  • Collaborate with the Dental Faculty Practice to integrate clinical experiences.
  • Manage program operations, including budgeting and fiscal oversight.
  • Participate in meeting with the other advanced educaiton program leadership of the College of Dentistry.
  • Provide direct clinical supervision to residents and engage in clinical practice within the faculty practice.
  • Engage in teaching, research, and service activities as appropriate to faculty rank.


    Responsibilities
    Oversee faculty, staff, and residents within the program and will report directly to the Dean or an assigned administrator within the College of Dentistry.

    Provide Clinical training through the following aspects:

    Provide Didactic (Classroom & Seminar) Training

    Director may also engage in faculty practice, providing patient care if desired.
    • Comprehensive Patient Care: Residents treat a broad range of patients, often those with complex medical histories and/or extensive dental needs.
    • Treatment Planning: Emphasis on interdisciplinary treatment planning, incorporating all aspects of general dentistry.
    • Restorative Dentistry: Advanced techniques in crowns, bridges, full-mouth rehabilitation, and digital dentistry.
    • Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy): Training in molar endodontics, rotary instrumentation, and obturation techniques.
    • Periodontics (Gum Therapy): Scaling and root planing, flap surgeries, soft tissue grafts, and implant maintenance.
    • Oral Surgery: Simple and complex extractions, socket preservation, biopsy techniques, and exposure to implant placement.
    • Implant Dentistry: May include implant placement and restoration or focus on implant restorations only.
    • Prosthodontics: Removable and fixed prosthodontics, overdentures, digital scanning, and CAD/CAM applications.
    • Pediatric Dentistry & Special Needs: Work with the pediatric dentistry postgraduate program and the Special Needs Clinic to expose residents to treating children, including behavior management and minor oral surgeries.
    • Emergency & Hospital Dentistry: Training in managing dental emergencies, and trauma case.

    Provide Didactic (Classroom & Seminar) Training
    • Case Presentations & Grand Rounds: Residents present complex cases and discuss treatment approaches.
    • Lectures & Continuing Education: Topics include prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and advanced treatment planning.
    • Practice Management: Business skills, insurance, legal considerations, and efficiency strategies for private practice.
    • Evidence-Based Dentistry: Critical evaluation of research and application of scientific literature to clinical practice.

    Director may also engage in faculty practice, providing patient care if desired.


    Qualifications
    • DDS or DMD degree from an accredited institution.
    • Completion of an AEGD or General Practice Residency (GPR) program.
    • 3 years of clinical practice experience.
    • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic or clinical settings.
    • Eligibility for teaching licensure in the state of Tennessee.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

    Background/Experience:
    • Prior experience in dental education and residency program administration preferred.
    • Experience with accreditation processes and/or compliance standards.
    • Evidence of ability to engage in scholarly activity and professional development.

    Specialty Skills:
    • Expertise in general dentistry procedures and techniques.
    • Strategic vision for program development and growth.
    • Ability to foster collaboration among faculty, staff, and residents.
