Job Summary


Colorado Diversity Initiative within the Graduate School at the University of Colorado Boulder welcomes applications for an Assistant Director! This role serves to enhance graduate students' recruitment and retention efforts through internal and national initiatives. CDI has historically focused on STEM fields, though it is envisioned to expand its disciplinary focus. The Assistant Director will focus on increasing access to STEM programs at CU Boulder and ensuring students thrive, with an emphasis on welcoming individuals from varied experiences and perspectives. Additionally, this position will measure and assess the progress of CDI's programs and initiatives and make data-driven recommendations for improvements. In the director's absence, the Assistant Director will be a liaison for CDI with CU Boulder STEM academic departments, faculty, and students.

Who We Are


The Colorado Diversity Initiative, within the Graduate School at the University of Colorado Boulder, oversees several programs on campus that promote diversity among science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. Through this initiative, we help undergraduates prepare for graduate school, offer learning and mentoring opportunities for graduate students, and provide broader impacts research support for faculty and staff.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Manage Recruitment Programs:
  • Support the implementation of the Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) program throughout the academic year and summer, focusing on historically underrepresented STEM undergraduate students. This includes:
    • Assisting with the selection and placement process for participating CU Boulder labs, graduate student mentors, and community events.
    • Contributing to the curriculum and training.
    • Working with program partners on travel.
    • Event planning.
    • Supervising student workers to launch and monitor promotional strategies (social media, flyers, virtual information sessions, and email campaigns).
  • Assist in organizing the Colorado Advantage Program Ph.D. Preview by facilitating at least two recruitment events annually (virtual and in-person) to broaden the pool of CU Boulder's STEM doctoral candidates. This includes:
    • Assisting with the selection process for participating CU Boulder labs, graduate student mentors, and community events.
    • Presenting graduate school requirements to Ph.D. Preview candidates
    • Assisting in recruiting speakers
    • Working with university partners to secure rooms, food, travel, and transportation as needed;
    • Collaborating with student workers to launch and monitor annual program recruitment efforts (social media, flyers, virtual information sessions, and email campaigns).
  • Support the delivery of research environment workshops for faculty and staff involved in SMART and Colorado Advantage programs.
  • Recruit students from a diverse set of backgrounds for CU Boulder's graduate programs, focusing on students from historically minoritized and marginalized backgrounds.
  • In partnership with CDI Director, establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external organizations to support recruitment and retention efforts.

Support Retention-Related Programs:
  • In partnership with the CDI Director, facilitate four hidden curriculum (two per semester) training courses to ensure CU Boulder STEM graduate students understand skills and disposition needed to succeed in graduate studies.
  • Provide 1-on-1 CU Boulder graduate student mentoring and coaching that aligns with the research methodologies for supporting graduate success.
  • Work with student organizations such as STEM Routes, Boulder Black Blossoms, and CU Caf to plan and coordinate events and activities that support engagement and community-building.
  • Assist the CDI Director in providing career development resources, such as reviewing personal statements and organizing professional workshops.
  • Support the development and implementation of initiatives aimed at addressing retention needs, informed by research and established practices.

Measure and Assess Progress:
  • Assist with regular assessments to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of programs and initiatives including end of program reports.
  • Support the facilitation of focus groups to gather feedback, measure outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to data-driven recommendations.

Administrative Duties and Other Responsibilities:
  • Assist with managing program responsibilities and providing support in the director's absence.
  • Serve as office manager and point of contact for questions and concerns from faculty, staff, students, community partners and visitors, managing the unit's calendars, supervising student worker, and maintaining office supplies and equipment.
  • Support boards and committees of the unit, including scheduling meetings, preparing, and distributing information, taking meeting minutes, and carrying out decisions.
  • Serve as unit's primary liaison to campus service units, including but not limited to Parking & Transportation Services, Facilities Management and Office of Information Technology.
  • Coordinate procurement and travel working closely with the VCAA Financial Service Center (FSC) to process expense reports, reimbursements, honorarium payments, purchase orders, and other purchasing forms including establishing contracts with outside speakers, visiting scholars/artists, and suppliers.

This position is assigned a hybrid work modality with three days in person and two days remote.


What We Can Offer


The starting salary range for this position is $69,500 - $78,148 annually. Onboarding assistance is available within departmental guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM, Education, or STEM Education field. A combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three years' experience providing direct student related support in a higher education setting. Some of this experience should include working with graduate students.


What You Will Need

  • Familiarity with challenges and opportunities related to addressing student needs and supporting success in higher education.
  • Understanding of national databases and resources that provide information on higher education demographics within STEM fields and related topics.
  • Ability to travel to conferences and events.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Proficient with standard office tools, including Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
  • Ability to navigate database programs and complex informational systems.
  • Ability to conduct individual/group advising sessions and mediate/resolve grievances and disagreements.
  • Demonstrated public speaking skills before large and small groups.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral communications.
  • STEM research, interpretation, and analysis skills.
  • Supervisory/leadership skills.
  • Strong network collaboration and team-building skills.
