Position Information
Hiring Department: Biological Sciences
Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends
FLSA status: Exempt
Earliest Start Date: 6/1/2025
Period and duration: Anticipated start date between June and December 2025. Two years of support is available.
Salary: $50,000 Annually, commensurate with experience.

Note: This position is a grant funded, temporary, contingent on availability of funds position with possibility of extension and is eligible for benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.

A valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position's essential functions.
Purpose of Position
Candidate will be responsible for management and assembly of genomic data, phylogeny estimation, and macroevolutionary analyses as part of NSF-funded project on suboscine bird evolution. They will also be responsible for writing and publishing results and for assisting with the supervision and mentorship of other project participants and lab members. The candidate will be under general supervision by the team of Principal Investigators, but will have moderate latitude to develop and design the project or spend time on related and unrelated research projects
Essential Functions
Coordinates, manages, conducts, and assesses phylogenomic research and associated samples and data.
Conducts bioinformatic assembly of genomic data.
Develops and implements phylogenetic methods applied to large datasets.
Designs and completes a variety of down-stream macroevolutionary analyses, as determined by the candidate and team of Principal Investigators.
Assists with permitting and reporting requirements associated with the project and other lab activities.
Curates and deposits data and results as required by the project and funding agency.
Trains other users in data management, genomic methods, and phylogenetic/macroevolutionary approaches.
Assists with mentoring and supervising graduate and undergraduate students.
Prepares scientific papers and other reports of research findings.
May participate in proposal writing.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: May carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Required Qualifications:
Education: PhD in a related field.
and
Experience: No years of experience post-PhD are required.
Must have computational skills including using Command Line Interfaces, basic coding in some combination of computing languages used in biology (Python, Bash, Perl, R), and prior experience in either bioinformatics for DNA sequence assembly or phylogenetic methods (both would be preferred).
Some background in the theory related to phylogeny estimation and/or macroevolution.
Ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects, evaluate research data, ensure reliability, relevance, and validity, interpret and publish research findings, and communicate effectively.
