Job Summary:
The University of Colorado (CU) School of Medicine is seeking a talented full-time Content Specialist/Writer. This position will plan, develop, and complete compelling content that is consistent with CU brand messaging. Topics to cover will include research, preventive health, clinical care, and patient experience.
The Content Specialist/Writer must exhibit exceptional attention to detail, the ability to stay on task, and the ability to work with varying levels of staff and faculty to gather information, write, and distribute content appropriately. The position is a hybrid in-person and remote work model, and it requires excellent project management abilities in a fast-paced environment.
This position is part of the CU School of Medicine communications team and will primarily support the Departments of Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine. Members of the team help elevate and connect the communications between the school and its departments, divisions, and centers through our shared services structure.
Key Responsibilities:
Writing - 70%
- Actively seeks out stories and creates blogs, patient stories, and other content about research, patient care, clinical trials, faculty accolades, student recognition, and philanthropy to promote the CU Departments of Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine.
- Monitors local, regional, and national healthcare news and ensures that the website includes appropriate information about current events by interviewing key faculty and staff members and creating associated news releases or web content.
- Tracks and records reports featuring the CU Departments of Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine in the media and online to promote on the department website.
- Conducts keyword research and utilizes search engine optimization to increase content performance and web traffic.
- Publishes content on Sitefinity, HubSpot, and EurekAlert.
- Prepares key takeaways from blog content to promote on social media posts and in newsletters.
- Provides recommendations on content calendar strategy.
- Collects blog analytics and provides data for quarterly reporting.
Publications - 20%
- Editor and collaborator on departmental and CU School of Medicine publications, such as magazines and annual reports.
Collaboration and Best Practices - 10%
- Builds and maintains relationships with faculty and staff within the CU School of Medicine and the Departments of Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine.
- Collaborates with CU School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus, UCHealth, Children's Hospital Colorado, Veterans Affairs, and others as appropriate.
- Identifies and implements best practices concerning communication practices, strategies, and tools.
Work Location:
Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business, marketing, communications, public or media relations, journalism, or related field.
- 3-5 years of experience working in communications and writing, preferably in health care or higher education.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with project management, prioritization, timelines, and ensuring on-time deliverables.
- Some experience with writing about science-specific topics and/or the healthcare sector.
- Ability to write for both consumer and clinical audiences.
- Photojournalism skills.
- Experience working in a web content management system (Sitefinity, HubSpot).
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office.
- Journalism background.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Exceptional independent writing skills and experience in developing clear, concise, and key message-focused communications.
- Excellent knowledge of editing and grammar, including AP style.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently capture the voice of a brand/person.
- Highly organized and dependable; able to multitask, working quickly and effectively to manage numerous deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Self-starter who can work independently and in a team environment.
- Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving skills.
- Dedicated to producing excellent work and outstanding customer service.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $54,254 to $69,012.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
