JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Strategic Communications Manager, the Strategic Communications Specialist serves as a main contributor to the UT Health Science Center's news site, and writes/edits communications, marketing, technical, promotional, and creative content for materials delivered through various mediums to promote and communicate the vision, mission, values, programs, services, and achievements of the organization. This position consults with clients across campus, analyzes and assesses needs, and develops communications to best support the needs.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, designs, writes, and creates original written communications and content for marketing and advertising, graphic and multimedia design, broadcasting, public relations, website, social media communications, creative/technical or scientific writing and editing, and video.
- Communicates and translates complex and technical information and subject matter in a way that can be easily consumed by a target audience.
- Works independently, following communications and editorial objectives and the general direction of the Strategic Communications Manager.
- Participates in brainstorming, planning, and strategy sessions with Communications and Marketing staff and clients.
- Uses professional judgment and communications expertise to create written content that supports UT Health Science Center campaigns and initiatives.
- Generates placement of UT Health Science Center articles in print, broadcast, and electronic outlets; drafts, edits, sends, and follows up with media on press releases (those generated internally and those generated by partner organizations)
- Field's media inquiries generated from the press; tracks inquiries and communicates with appropriate university representatives.
- Develops relationships with communicators at partner healthcare organizations (UCH, Methodist, VA, St. Jude, Le Bonheur, Medical District Collaborative, Erlanger, UT Medical Center, etc.)
- Assists in managing the news website.
- Reviews, compiles metrics daily and monthly, and produces reports to assist in measuring communications production and outcomes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Advertising/Marketing, Journalism, or a relevant field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in professional communications, media relations, public relations, advertising/marketing or a similar environment. Must have a valid Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including self-editing skills and the ability to present information clearly, concisely, technically, and imaginatively.
- Ability to handle media relations; ability to network with media, clients, and key stakeholders.
- Ability to write creative content for print and digital use from concept to proofing to final edits.
- Proficient computer skills, especially in MS Office 365, and the ability to learn new software.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to provide attention to detail, be punctual, adhere to deadlines, and maintain a strong work ethic.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with and provide recommendations to management.
- Strong organizational skills to maximize workflow efficiency as needed.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings. May require occasional overnight travel.
